Breast Implant

  • (Breast Augmentation, Augmentation mammoplasty or Breast Enlargement)
  • Breast implant surgery is one of the most common and popular cosmetic body surgeries in the world today. Thousands of women from all over the world undergo this cosmetic procedure to increase their breast size and improve their overall appearance and self-confidence
  • Breast implant requires placing artificial implants under the breast tissue to increase and enhance the size and shape of the breasts in case they appear to be disproportionately small to the overall body size.

Overview

Who needs it?
  • Breast Implant surgery is advised for:
  • An attractive figure
  • An improved overall contour to the chest area
  • Clothes to fit better
  • Reshaping sagging breasts after drastic weight loss, pregnancy or due to ageing
  • Regaining symmetry in breasts if one is significantly smaller than the other

Who is an ideal candidate for Breast Lift surgery?

  • These are the main factors that decide if a woman is an ideal candidate for a breast lift surgery:
  • If breast size is visibly smaller as compared to the rest of the body
  • If smaller breast size is affecting confidence and quality of life
  • If clothes are not fitting properly
  • If breast lose their volume and natural shape due to child birth or ageing
  • If drastic weight loss results in sagging breasts
  • If breasts are asymmetrical and differ in size with each other
  • The cosmetic surgeon will also take into consideration the medical history, overall health status and whether the potential candidate has realistic expectations regarding the results of breast lift surgery.

How safe is it?

  • Although breast implants are designed to last a life time, there are times when these might need to be replaced. The surgeon will schedule regular follow up visits to monitor the success of the breast implants.

How is it performed?

  • Breast lift surgery is aimed at improving the size and shape of the breasts using natural fat transfer or artificial implants.
  • Autologous fat transfer
  • In this procedure, the cosmetic surgeon will attempt to restore the natural shape and size of the breasts using fat sourced from another part of the patient’s body. This is done using minimally invasive liposuction technique. Excessive fat may be removed from thighs, flanks or abdomen.
  • The harvested fat is processed and then injected using long-needle injections. The amount of fat sourced and injected depends on the degree of loss of volume of the breast.
  • Breast implants
  • Breast implant requires administering general anesthesia to avoid pain and discomfort to the patient during the surgery.
  • The surgeon will make small incisions (location depends on the type of implant) along the underside of the breasts. The breast tissue is then separated to create a space for the implant. The pocket for placing the implant may be underneath the pectoral muscles (between the chest wall and breast tissue) or under the breast tissue but on top of the pectoral muscles.
  • Types of breast implants
  • Breast implants today come in several varieties. The type of breast implant is determined mainly by the patient’s individual medical history, aesthetic aims and the body shape.
  • These are the commonly used breast implant types:
  • Saline-filled breast implants – These have a soft outer shell which is filled with sterile saline water. This type of implants may be pre-filled while the other type can be filled with the sterile saline water at the time of surgery, which allows for minor modification if required.
  • Structured saline-filled breast implants – These also involve an outer soft shell. The shell is not only filled with sterile saline water but also has an additional soft structure inside which acts similar to soft silicone gel. This implant retains its shape better than conventional saline-filled implants.
  • Silicone gel-filled breast implants – TThese have a softer outer covering. The inside is filled with a soft and elastic gel. These are available in a variety of shapes and sizes. These also require a comparatively longer incision.
  • Cohesive gel silicone gel-filled breast implants – These are also known as ‘gummy bear’ or ‘form stable’ implants in common terms. The inside is filled with an advanced cohesive gel which is made of cross-linked silicone molecules. This makes the implant material thicker and more firm as compared to conventional silicone-filled implants. These are able to retain their shape better and for a longer time.
  • In case the cosmetic surgeon sees significant drooping or sagging of the breasts, then breast implant surgery may be combined with a breast lift procedure.
