Breast Reduction

Breast Reduction

  • (Reduction mammoplasty)
  • Breast reduction, as the name suggests, is used to reduce the size of breasts. This cosmetic surgical procedure not only reduces abnormally and disproportionately large breasts but also reshapes them to make them better suited according to the body type.
  • This cosmetic surgical procedure not only helps to improve a woman’s overall appearance but also relieves the physical and emotional burden that accompanies overly large breasts.

Overview

Who needs it?
  • Breast reduction surgery is advised for:
  • Overly large breasts that cause shoulder, neck and back pain
  • Heavy breasts where the nipples and areolas point downwards
  • Breasts where one is smaller than the other
  • Women who are self-conscious about overly large breasts

Who is an ideal candidate for Breast Reduction surgery?

  • Breast reduction is mostly recommended for women who develop overly large breasts, usually due to obesity, after childbirth or even due to over-sensitivity to estrogen. This is often the result of heredity.
  • The factors that decide if a woman is an ideal candidate for breast reduction are:
  • If back aches, neck pain is experienced and skin irritation is felt under the breasts
  • If difficulty in breathing and formation of grooves on shoulder from bra straps
  • If poor posture and numbness in part of the breasts are seen
  • If clothes that fit perfectly all over are hard to find
  • If breasts size is felt to be disproportionately large
  • If the patient has realistic expectations about the results
  • If there are no plans for pregnancy in the future
  • If the patient is ready to maintain the current weight

How is it performed?

  • Breast reduction mainly involves removing excessive breast tissue, skin and underlying fat and then shifting the nipples and areolas higher.
  • The cosmetic surgeon will mark the points of incision before the surgery. General anesthesia is administered to prevent discomfort and pain during the procedure. The incisions are based on the size of the breasts, the degree of sagging and the current position of the nipples and the areolas.
  • Once the incisions are made the surgeon will use minimally invasive technique (liposuction) to remove the excessive fatty tissue from underneath the breast skin. Once the excessive fat is removed, the surgeon will begin removing the extra skin with a scalpel. In case the breasts are not symmetrical then additional fat will be removed from the larger breast. The remaining skin and fat is then reshaped to form a more firm and youthful looking breast shape.
  • The next step involves removing the nipple and areola which are then positioned (higher) in proportion to the decrease breast size.
  • The incisions are then closed using fine sutures.

What is recovery like after a Breast Reduction surgery?

  • The recovery period and the results vary depending on the type of incision required for the individual breast reduction surgery. The scars are barely visible as the surgeon will make incisions that are fairly concealed by the natural crease of the breast. The incision scars also disappear within a short period of time.
